Does immigration form part of your pre-employment check list?

As part of the Government’s continued focus on tackling illegal immigration, they have announced a further set of measures to be part of a new immigration bill.

Whilst not one of the headline measures contained in the bill, it includes a tightening of the defences available to businesses found employing people who do not have the right to work in the UK.

Whilst this remains only a proposal, business should ensure that they are checking that all their employees have the necessary passports or visa’s in place before offering them employment.

The legal defence for other kinds of business discovered using illegal workers will also change.

They will no longer be able to claim they did not know a particular employee was not allowed to work – they will have to show that they carried out proper checks before taking them on.
